Flying a drone for any purpose that furthers a business puts you under 14 CFR Part 107, the FAA rule set for small unmanned aircraft weighing less than 55 pounds including payload. Money changing hands is not the test. Photographing your own listing as a real estate agent or shooting footage you later monetize both count, and the FAA has issued civil penalties against operators who assumed otherwise.

The certificate itself is not hard to earn: a written knowledge test, a security background check, and a modest fee, with no flight check and no logged hours. What catches people is everything attached to it, from airspace authorization to the waiver process when the mission you want to fly falls outside the default rules.

Who Needs a Remote Pilot Certificate

There are two legal lanes. Recreational flyers operate under the exception for limited recreational operations: they take the free TRUST online test, follow the safety guidelines of an FAA-recognized community-based organization, and fly purely for fun. Everyone else flies under Part 107 with a remote pilot certificate.

The gray zone is internal business use. A farmer scouting his own fields or a nonprofit shooting a fundraising video is furthering an organizational purpose, which puts the flight squarely in Part 107 even though nobody is paying. Aircraft weight does not change this. A drone under 250 grams escapes the recreational registration requirement, which is why so many designs target that number as discussed in sub-250g drone design, but it does not exempt a commercial operator from certification.

The Knowledge Test: Format, Cost, and Content

The exam is the Unmanned Aircraft General - Small, usually called the UAG. Sixty multiple-choice questions, a two-hour window, and a passing score of 70 percent. It costs $175 at a PSI-affiliated testing center, and you pay again if you retake it after the required waiting period.

Before scheduling, create an FAA Tracking Number through the IACRA system. Walk in without one and the testing center will still seat you, but reconciling the record afterward turns a one-week process into a month.

Where Candidates Actually Lose Points

Failures cluster in two places. The first is sectional chart reading, where you decode the class of airspace at a given point along with its floor and ceiling from a printed legend. The second is aviation weather, where METAR and TAF strings have to be read cold. Budget fifteen to twenty focused study hours if you have no aviation background.

From a Passing Score to a Certificate in Hand

After you pass, you file FAA Form 8710-13 through IACRA and the application goes to TSA for security vetting. Most applicants download a temporary certificate within a week or two of clearing vetting, with the permanent card arriving by mail later. The certificate does not expire, but your currency does.

Registering the Aircraft and Meeting Remote ID

The pilot and the aircraft are certified separately. Under Part 107 every aircraft must be registered individually at $5 each for a three-year term, with the number marked on an exterior surface. Registration is also where Remote ID enters: the aircraft must broadcast standard Remote ID from the factory or carry an approved module, and the manufacturer-side obligations are covered in FAA Remote ID for drones. An aircraft with no compliant Remote ID can legally fly only inside an FAA-recognized identification area.

LAANC and Airspace Authorization

Part 107 lets you fly in uncontrolled Class G airspace without asking anyone. Controlled airspace, meaning Class B, C, D, and the surface areas of Class E, requires prior authorization, and a surprising share of the United States near populated areas is controlled.

The mechanism is LAANC, the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability. The FAA publishes UAS Facility Maps that divide controlled airspace into grid squares, each with a pre-approved ceiling of 400, 200, 100, 50, or 0 feet above ground level. Request a flight at or below the grid ceiling through an approved LAANC supplier app and authorization typically comes back in seconds. Squares marked zero, which cluster at runway approach ends, fall outside LAANC entirely and require a further coordination request through the FAA DroneZone portal, with a month or more of lead time. Longer term, the airspace layer is heading toward the automated coordination model described in drone traffic management.

The Operating Limits Attached to the Certificate

  • Maximum 400 feet above ground level, or within 400 feet of a structure when inspecting it.
  • Maximum 100 miles per hour ground speed, and minimum three statute miles of flight visibility.
  • Visual line of sight at all times, with or without a visual observer.
  • One aircraft per remote pilot unless waived.
  • Night operation is allowed once you complete the updated recurrent training and the aircraft carries anti-collision lighting visible for three statute miles.
  • Operations over people and over moving vehicles are permitted only under the specific operational categories, which turn on injury thresholds and rotating-part exposure.

Waivers Worth Applying For

When the mission does not fit, you file a certificate of waiver through DroneZone. Multiple aircraft under one pilot, operation from a moving vehicle, and flight beyond visual line of sight are the common requests. The last is by far the hardest, requiring a detect-and-avoid argument the FAA will accept, and the realistic path is in BVLOS drone operations.

Waivers are granted on the strength of the safety case, not the flattering description of the mission. Applications that name the specific hazard, the mitigation, and the evidence behind the mitigation get approved. Applications that promise to be careful do not. Allow ninety days. Staying Current After You Pass

Recurrent training is free and online through the FAA Safety Team site, and must be completed every twenty-four calendar months. Keep the completion certificate. You also carry reporting duties: an accident causing serious injury or property damage above $500 is reportable within ten days.
