Which route is right depends on whether you already have a manufacturable design, how complex the product is, and what the prototype needs to prove. Here is how to choose — and what each path costs.
First: know what your prototype needs to prove
A prototype is a question made physical. "Does this mechanism work?" needs a rough functional model. "Will buyers want this?" needs a polished appearance model. "Can this be manufactured?" needs a production-intent build. Defining the question first prevents the most common money-waster: paying for a beautiful, expensive prototype when a $50 test would have answered you. Option 1: Build it yourself
For simple concepts, DIY is unbeatable for speed and cost. Foam, cardboard, hardware-store parts, a hobby 3D printer, and electronics platforms like maker-grade microcontroller boards can produce a convincing proof of concept for under a few hundred dollars. The limits arrive fast: no professional CAD, no engineering analysis, and a build quality that cannot go in front of investors or retailers. DIY is a first step, not a destination.
Option 2: Online fabrication services
If you already have a CAD model, online services will 3D print, CNC machine, or laser-cut your parts and ship them in days. Prices start at tens of dollars for small printed parts. Option 3: Hire a freelancer
Freelance CAD designers and engineers can take you from sketch to printable file for anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on complexity. This works well for single-discipline jobs — a purely mechanical part, an enclosure, a simple assembly. It gets risky when the product spans disciplines: a connected device needs mechanical design, PCB design, firmware, and antenna work that one freelancer rarely covers, and you become the project manager gluing four contractors together.
Option 4: Engage a product development firm
An engineering firm takes responsibility for the whole outcome: requirements, industrial design, mechanical engineering, electronics, firmware, fabrication, and testing under one roof. Expect functional-prototype projects to run from a few thousand dollars for simple mechanical products into five figures for electronic and connected devices. How to start, whichever route you choose
- Write a one-page brief: what the product does, who it is for, target size and price, and what this prototype must prove.
- Gather references: sketches, photos of similar products, and any measurements you have.
- Protect first if you plan to share widely: a provisional patent application is the inexpensive way to secure a filing date before disclosing your idea broadly.
- Budget for iteration: version one will teach you things; version two will work. Plan money and weeks for at least one rebuild.
