What Backers Are Actually Buying

A crowdfunding backer is not buying a product. They are buying a bet that you can deliver one, and the prototype in your video is the primary evidence. Most campaign teams misread this and optimize for the wrong thing: they build one heroic engineering rig that proves the physics and shoot it badly, or they build a beautiful painted shell that does nothing and get caught in the comments within a day.

The prototype has three jobs on a campaign, and they pull in different directions. It has to make the core benefit visible in a few seconds of video. It has to look like something a person would own. And it has to be honest enough that a backer who reads the update log six months later does not feel lied to. Budget against those three jobs, not against a vague idea of "having a prototype."

What Must Genuinely Work

The rule is simple: the thing your headline claims must be real, on camera, in one continuous shot. If the pitch is that your cooler chills a can in ninety seconds, the camera watches it chill a can in ninety seconds. If the pitch is a folding mechanism, the hands in the shot fold it, without a cut.

Everything downstream of the headline claim is negotiable. Backers forgive a wired power tether hidden behind the table. They do not forgive a cut in the middle of the one thing you sold them. Platform rules also matter here: major platforms prohibit simulated functionality in product demos and require that the images show a working prototype rather than a rendering, and enforcement is real enough that campaigns get pulled.

  • Must be real: the primary function, the interaction the user performs, the claimed speed or capacity if you state a number, and the overall size relative to a human hand or body.
  • Can legitimately be staged: battery runtime (run it on a bench supply), final materials and color, app screens driven by a laptop instead of the real firmware, internal packaging density, and anything you disclose in the campaign text.
  • Never fake: a claimed measurement, a safety behavior, or a certification. Those become fraud claims rather than editing choices.

How Many Units the Shoot Really Needs

Teams plan for one and end up scrambling. A realistic campaign build is three to five units:

  • One hero appearance model. Final CMF, painted, logo applied, no visible seams or support scars. This is what appears in every still image and every hero shot.
  • One or two functional units. Ugly is fine. These do the demonstrations and get abused during a two-day shoot.
  • One backup of whichever type is more fragile. Something will break on set. A day of studio time plus crew costs more than a spare housing.
  • One cutaway or sectioned model if the internals are part of the story. Showing the mechanism inside is persuasive, and a cutaway display model is cheap next to a second full build.

If the product comes in multiple colors, do not build five. Build one hero and render the rest, disclosed as renderings. That is accepted practice and far cheaper than the alternative; the going rate for that work is covered in product rendering cost.

What the Hero Model Costs

For a handheld consumer product with an enclosure and modest electronics, a campaign-ready set typically runs $8,000 to $30,000. The split is roughly a third industrial design and CAD, a third fabrication (SLA or SLS parts, CNC metal details, urethane cast copies if you need matching units), and a third finishing. Finishing is the line founders under-budget: primer, sand, paint, clear coat, and pad-printed graphics on a single housing is often several days of hand labor, and it is what separates a model that reads as a product from one that reads as a 3D print. Add three to six weeks of calendar time on top of the design work, and add a contingency loop. First articles almost never photograph correctly on the first attempt.

Shooting It

Design the prototype for the camera, not only for the bench. Practical details that change the build:

  • Matte finishes photograph better than gloss under studio lights; gloss shows every sanding scratch and every ring light in the reflection.
  • Leave a hidden access port for power and a service opening you can reach without breaking the paint.
  • Make the demo repeatable in under thirty seconds so you can shoot it twenty times.
  • Keep the hero unit off the demo table entirely. Handling marks it.

The mindset overlaps heavily with building a trade show prototype: a unit that must perform on demand, in front of strangers, over and over.

What Happens After the Money Lands

This is where campaigns die. The prototype that shot the video is usually a design that cannot be manufactured: machined aluminum where the product needs to be molded, hand-fitted tolerances, a development board inside, hand-soldered wiring. Funding does not shorten the path from that object to a product; it only pays for it.

Assume six to fourteen months from campaign close to first shipment for a molded consumer product with electronics, and price the campaign so it survives that. Tooling, certification, and a pilot run are all still ahead of you, and the sequence is the one described in prototype to production. One useful discipline: before you launch, get one manufacturing quote based on the real design intent, not the prototype. If that quote plus fulfillment plus platform fees plus the campaign's own marketing spend exceeds your funding target, you are raising money to lose it on every unit. Fix the design or the price before launch, not after.
