In the US market, a single photorealistic product rendering from clean, production-ready CAD typically costs a few hundred dollars. A polished set of hero images with tuned materials, studio lighting, and several angles usually lands in the high hundreds to low thousands. Full lifestyle scenes with environments, props, and human interaction, or a short animated sequence, run into the mid four figures and up. The single biggest variable is whether usable 3D geometry already exists.
What You Are Actually Paying For
A render invoice covers four distinct pieces of work, and they are priced separately in practice:
- Geometry preparation. Cleaning CAD, adding fillets and cosmetic details, or modeling the product from scratch if no CAD exists.
- Materials and lighting. Building believable plastic, brushed metal, glass, rubber, and fabric, then lighting the scene so those materials read correctly.
- Composition and output. Camera angles, resolution, transparent-background versions, print sizes.
- Revisions. Usually the least controlled and most expensive line item.
What Drives the Price
- Is there CAD? Rendering from a finished mechanical model is a fraction of the cost of building a model from sketches or photographs. If you already have engineering CAD, you have already paid for most of the work — see CAD design services cost.
- Material complexity. A matte molded housing is easy. Clear polycarbonate over a backlit display, chrome next to soft-touch, or knit fabric each add real hours.
- Number of views. The first image carries the setup cost; additional angles from the same scene are much cheaper. Order them together.
- Scene. Product-on-white is the cheap tier. A kitchen counter, a job site, or hands holding the product means environment modeling, props, and often licensed assets.
- Motion. Animation and exploded-view sequences are priced per second of finished footage and are a different order of magnitude from stills.
- Usage rights. Broad commercial use, packaging, and paid advertising sometimes carry different licensing than a one-off web image.
What Makes a Quote Balloon
Unbounded revision cycles, CMF that is still undecided when rendering starts, geometry that keeps changing underneath the artist, and a brief that arrives in pieces. Every one of those is avoidable on your side.
Renders From Inside the Engineering Process
Most founders buy renders as a standalone marketing service, and pay twice: once for the engineering CAD, and again for a visual artist to rebuild an approximation of the same product. When the render comes out of the same CAD that will drive tooling, two things improve. The cost drops, because the geometry already exists. And the image is honest — the proportions, wall thicknesses, seams, and button positions are the ones that will actually ship.
That honesty matters more than it sounds. Crowdfunding backers and retail buyers who receive a product that does not match the launch image generate refunds and reviews you cannot undo. When a Render Is Enough, and When You Need Something Physical
Renders are the right tool for:

- Retailer and distributor pitches before tooling exists.
- Packaging artwork, listings, and manuals.
- Comparing color and finish options before committing, alongside proper CMF decisions on physical chips.
Renders are the wrong tool when the question is physical: does it fit the hand, does the mechanism work, does the lid seal, does it survive a drop. Those need a real part, and the budget for that is a separate conversation — see cost to make a prototype.
How to Pay Less Without Compromising the Result
- Freeze the CAD first. Rendering a moving target is the most reliable way to double the bill.
- Decide color and finish before you brief. Exploring CMF inside a render project is expensive exploration.
- Order all views at once. One setup, many outputs.
- Write the shot list and the usage list up front, including sizes, backgrounds, and where the images will appear.
- Cap revisions explicitly — two rounds is normal and should be in writing.
- Reuse the scene for later product variants and colorways instead of starting fresh.
