Two Different Jobs That Both Get Called Design
A founder posts a request for a designer, gets forty replies, and half the portfolios are logos and app screens while the other half are renderings of housings and mechanisms. The word design covers both, and hiring the wrong one costs three to six weeks and several thousand dollars before anyone realizes the mismatch.
The distinction is simple once stated. An industrial designer shapes a three-dimensional object that has to be manufactured, held, and used. A graphic designer shapes two-dimensional communication that has to be printed, displayed, or read. One works in millimeters, draft angles, and materials; the other works in typography, hierarchy, and color systems. Both matter to a physical product, and they enter the project at different times.
What an Industrial Designer Actually Delivers
Industrial design is product form development constrained by manufacturing. The deliverables are concrete:
- Concept sketches exploring several formal directions against the brief.
- Ergonomic study models — foam or printed — checked against real hands and real use postures.
- Surface CAD of the exterior geometry, built so a mechanical engineer can thicken it into moldable parts.
- A parting-line and shut-line strategy, because where the halves meet is a design decision as much as an engineering one.
- A color, material, and finish specification with texture callouts, Pantone references for molded color, and finish samples.
- Photorealistic renderings for the website, the pitch deck, and the trade show booth.
The output is judged by whether it can be tooled. A beautiful surface with no draft, a wall thickness that varies from 1 mm to 4 mm, or a snap detail that cannot eject from a mold is not a finished industrial design. What a Graphic Designer Actually Delivers
Graphic design on a hardware product shows up in more places than founders expect:
- Brand identity — logo, wordmark, type system, and color palette that will appear on the product, the box, and the site.
- Packaging artwork, including the dielines, retail panel layout, barcode placement, and required regulatory text.
- Product graphics: silkscreen legends, membrane keypad art, labels, and rating plates.
- Manuals, quick-start cards, and warranty inserts.
- Web and sales collateral, ad creative, and Amazon listing images.
- Screen interface design when the product has a display, though that specialty is often split off as UI design.
A graphic designer decides that the power symbol is 6 mm tall in a particular weight, that the brand blue prints as one value on coated stock and another when molded, and that the retail panel communicates the product benefit in under three seconds. Where the Two Overlap
The overlap zone is the product surface itself. Icons molded into a housing, a logo on a front bezel, a legend around a rotary knob, and the layout of a control panel all sit in both territories. The physical constraints — how small a molded icon can be and still read, whether a pad-printed graphic survives cleaning, whether a laser-etched mark is legible on a textured surface — are industrial design questions. These get resolved well when the two designers talk directly. They get resolved badly when a graphic file is handed over after the tool is cut and someone discovers the logo needs a flat 0.5 mm larger than the available boss. When a Product Needs Both — and in What Order
Almost every physical product sold to a customer needs both. The order matters more than the fact.
Industrial design comes first
Form drives everything downstream. The housing geometry sets the package size, which sets the carton dimensions, which sets the artwork dielines. Starting packaging artwork before the product geometry is frozen means redoing it. Industrial design typically runs in parallel with early mechanical engineering, well before tooling.
Brand identity can run in parallel
Naming and identity work does not depend on geometry and can proceed at the same time, which is useful because a trademark search and filing takes months. Packaging and collateral come last
Once the product geometry is frozen and the mass is known, packaging design can be done once and done right. Sales collateral and product photography follow, and until real units exist, renderings from the industrial designer carry the marketing.
Budget and Hiring Reality
US market rates differ substantially. Industrial design for a moderately complex consumer product commonly runs $15,000 to $60,000 depending on the number of parts and iteration rounds, with the range and drivers broken down in how much industrial design costs. Brand identity for a small product company typically runs $3,000 to $20,000, packaging artwork $2,500 to $10,000 per SKU family, and a manual a few thousand more.
When budget forces a choice, prioritize by what fails without it. A product with poor form is expensive to fix after tooling and may never sell. A product with mediocre packaging graphics sells worse but can be fixed in a print run for a few thousand dollars. Spend on the irreversible decision first.
One warning: a talented graphic designer producing a product concept in a rendering tool will generate something that looks great and cannot be manufactured. Renderings hide draft, wall thickness, parting lines, and internal volume. A concept image is not a design, which is exactly the trap described in first product design mistakes.
