CMF design — color, material, and finish — is the part of product design that decides what the product looks and feels like in the customer's hand, and it is decided by the manufacturing process, the use environment, and the durability requirement as much as by aesthetics. Texture is cut into the mold. Color is limited by the resin. Paint adds a whole secondary operation with its own yield loss. That is why CMF has to be settled before tooling, not after.
What CMF Actually Covers
A complete CMF specification names, for every visible part: the resin or alloy and its grade, the color with a reference standard and an allowed variation, the surface texture with a recognized texture designation, any coating or plating, and every printed or engraved mark with its position and process. It also names the master samples that production will be measured against.
Anything left vague in that list gets decided by the factory, on a Friday, without you.
Why CMF Gets Postponed — and Why That's Expensive
CMF feels like a finishing touch, so it slides to the end of the schedule. But the decisions are upstream of tooling:
- Mold texture is machined or etched into the steel. Changing it later means reworking or re-polishing the tool.
- Draft angles have to increase with texture depth, which changes the part geometry.
- A dark glossy surface shows every flow line, weld line, and sink mark, so it changes where you are allowed to put gates and ribs. Our guide to injection molding defects shows what those look like.
- Soft-touch coating needs clearance and masking features designed into the part.
- Some colors are simply unavailable in the resin grade the structure requires.
Common Finishing Methods
Color in the Resin
Pre-colored resin or masterbatch added at the press. Cheapest per unit, no secondary operation, and scratches do not show a different color underneath. The trade-offs are a limited palette, a minimum order for custom colors, and mild lot-to-lot variation.
Texture in the Mold
Textures are specified from standard texture and polish scales rather than described in words. They hide molding cosmetic defects, improve grip, and cost nothing per part once the tool exists. They are also close to permanent, so choose deliberately.
Post-Mold Paint and Coating
Spray paint, soft-touch polyurethane, hard coats on lenses, and UV-cure clear coats. This is how you get a color or feel the resin cannot give you. It also adds handling, masking, curing time, scrap, and a per-unit cost that never goes away — and every coating needs adhesion and abrasion testing, because a coating that peels looks worse than no coating at all.
Printing and Marking
Pad printing for small curved marks, screen printing for flat graphics, laser marking for permanent legends on plastic or metal, in-mold decoration for graphics protected under the surface. Laser marking is generally the most durable and the least fussy in production; pad printing is the most flexible and the least durable.
Metal Finishes
Bead blasting, brushing, and anodizing for aluminum; powder coating for steel enclosures; PVD for hard decorative coatings. Anodizing dyes have real color and consistency limits, especially across different alloys and extrusion lots — see anodizing aluminum cost. If two anodized parts sit next to each other, plan for a visible seam in shade.
How the Choice Actually Gets Made
Work through the constraints in this order and the palette narrows itself:
- Structure and process. The mechanical requirement picks the material family first — see how to choose plastic for your product.
- Environment. Outdoors means UV stability. A kitchen means grease and cleaning chemicals. A clinic means alcohol and disinfectant wipes, which destroy many soft-touch coatings.
- Contact. Skin contact, food contact, or patient contact each impose their own material restrictions.
- Cost and volume. Every secondary operation has a per-unit price and a minimum quantity.
- Brand. Only inside what survives the four constraints above.
Building a Palette and a Design Language
A coherent product looks like it was designed by one team: a primary body color, one secondary, and a single disciplined accent used only for the interactive elements. Products that accumulate accent colors read as cluttered. If you plan a family of products, define the palette and texture pairing once so the second product does not have to reinvent it.
Will the Finish Survive the Product's Life?
Cosmetic warranty claims are common and avoidable. Before committing, test the actual finish on the actual substrate for abrasion and rub resistance, adhesion, chemical resistance against the substances your users really touch — sunscreen, insect repellent, hand sanitizer, cleaning sprays — UV exposure if the product lives outside, and sweat if it touches skin. Validate Before Tooling, Then Lock It
Approve physical color chips in the real material and texture under several light sources — never a screen. Build appearance models by painting and finishing prototypes so the whole team is judging the same object. Then sign master samples, set an allowed color tolerance, and hold first-shot parts against them. Renderings help sell the concept, and product rendering is worth doing, but a render is not a color approval.
