The Short Answer: Six to Twelve Weeks

For a single-housing consumer product with defined internals, industrial design runs about six to eight weeks of calendar time. A multi-part product with a mechanism, a display, and packaging runs ten to sixteen weeks. Anything under four weeks is either a styling refresh of an existing product or a program that will be redone.

The number that matters is calendar time, not designer hours. A six-week program is roughly 120 to 180 hours of actual work spread across a schedule with review gates. Which means the schedule depends on you at least as much as on the designer: the two longest delays in most programs are waiting for a decision and waiting for information the client already had.

Research and Design Brief: One to Two Weeks

Competitor teardowns, the dimensional envelope of the internal components, applicable standards, price positioning, and a written brief. If you supply a completed brief and a fixed internal envelope on day one, this compresses to two or three days. If the electronics are still being laid out and nobody can say how big the board is, the stage does not really end, it just gets deferred and reappears later as rework. Concepts: Two to Three Weeks

Three to five distinct directions with sketches or rough 3D, key views, and a rationale for each. Two weeks is realistic for a handheld or benchtop product; three for something with a complex mechanical layout or several user positions.

Then add your review time. A concept presentation that waits eleven days for a decision has added eleven days to the program, and this is the most common invisible delay. Book the review meeting when the stage starts and put a single named approver in the room.

Detailed Development and 3D Modeling: Two to Four Weeks

The chosen direction becomes real geometry: rebuilt surfaces with proper continuity, draft, radii, split lines, and internal components placed so clearances are verified rather than assumed. Two to three review rounds inside this stage is normal, and each round is roughly three to five working days of work plus your response time. Appearance Model and Validation: Two to Four Weeks

Cheap shape studies overlap with earlier stages and take two to four days each, which is why foam and low-resolution models are worth doing at concept stage rather than at the end.

A painted appearance model finished to production intent is different: five to fifteen working days at the model shop after files are released, plus shipping. If you need it for a trade show or an investor meeting, work backwards from that date and release files three weeks earlier than feels necessary. Running user sessions on the model adds one to two weeks, and it is the cheapest insurance in the whole program.

How Complexity Changes the Picture

  • Single molded housing, no display, off-the-shelf internals: five to seven weeks.
  • Handheld device with buttons, screen, and charging contacts: eight to ten weeks.
  • Benchtop product with a mechanism, door, and consumables: ten to fourteen weeks.
  • Product family with shared architecture across three SKUs: fourteen to twenty weeks, though far less than three separate programs.
  • Regulated product requiring formative usability studies: add four to eight weeks for recruiting, sessions, and the resulting changes.

Physical size matters less than people expect. Part count, number of user interactions, and number of distinct assemblies drive the schedule.

What Stretches the Schedule, and How to Defend Against It

Late stakeholders. Someone senior sees the design for the first time at week nine and reopens concept selection. Cost: three to six weeks. Fix: get every approver into the concept review, in writing.

Moving internals. The board grows 8 mm, the battery changes format, the motor is swapped. Every change after Stage 3 propagates through surfaces. Fix: freeze the internal envelope before detailed development and treat later changes as paid change orders with a stated schedule impact.

Requirements discovered late. A certification requirement, a retailer packaging constraint, or a patent workaround that arrives at week ten. Fix: complete the constraints list during research.

Design that cannot be manufactured. Engineering rejects the geometry and it comes back to design. Fix: put a manufacturing review inside Stage 3, not after it.

Endless refinement. Rounds four, five, and six chase differences nobody outside the room can see. Fix: set the number of included rounds in the contract and price additional ones.

Where It Sits in the Whole Program

Industrial design is typically 10 to 20 percent of the calendar from concept to first shipment. Mechanical engineering, tooling, testing, and pilot production follow, and tooling alone commonly adds twelve to sixteen weeks. One practical scheduling note: overlapping industrial design with early mechanical engineering saves three to five weeks with almost no risk, provided the internal envelope is frozen. Overlapping it with tooling saves nothing and costs a great deal.
