The Detail Nobody Owns Until the Week Before Tooling
Markings are the last thing on a product to get decided and one of the first things a user encounters. In most projects the industrial designer assumes engineering will handle it, engineering assumes the graphics come from marketing, and marketing sends a logo file three days before the mold goes to steel. The result is a rushed artwork package, symbols that nobody tested, and a compliance mark that turns out to be the wrong size.
Treat markings as a deliverable with an owner and a review date, and keep the artwork package under revision control exactly like a drawing.Three Kinds of Marking, Three Different Jobs
Lumping them together is the root of most mistakes, because each type has different rules:
- Functional markings. Power symbols, port labels, direction arrows, dial gradations, on and off states. These serve usability. They can be as small as legibility allows and they should follow existing conventions rather than inventing new ones.
- Safety and warning markings. Hot surface, pinch point, electrical hazard, do not immerse. These are governed by ANSI Z535 for format and often by a product-specific standard for content. Wording, color, and the signal word (DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION) are prescribed, and they must survive the life of the product.
- Regulatory and identification markings. The FCC ID, UL or ETL mark, the CE mark for export, WEEE crossed-out bin, model number, serial number, input voltage rating, and country of origin. Each has a minimum height and a placement rule set by the body that owns it, and each is checked during certification.
The third group is not optional and not negotiable, so it should be the first thing placed on the layout. Designers habitually put the compliance block on a hidden underside and then discover the fixture blocks it or the label area is too small. Get the list from your test lab at the start of the certification process, which for most electronics runs alongside FCC certification and product safety testing.
Rules for Icons People Understand Without a Manual
An icon works when a first-time user names its function correctly in under two seconds. A handful of habits get you most of the way:
Use the convention, not your idea. IEC 60417 and ISO 7000 are databases of standardized graphical symbols for equipment. If a symbol exists for your function, use it. Users have been trained on these for decades and a cleverer alternative costs comprehension.
Keep the stroke weight uniform and heavy enough to survive the process. A hairline that looks elegant in Illustrator disappears in a mold texture or fills in during pad printing. As a working minimum, keep strokes at 0.010 in (0.25 mm) for printing and 0.012 in (0.3 mm) for molded-in detail, and keep the gap between strokes at least as large as the stroke itself.
Set a minimum icon size and enforce it. Below about 0.16 in (4 mm) tall, detail collapses. Simplify the symbol rather than shrinking it. And contrast beats color. Roughly 8 percent of men have a color vision deficiency, so a red and green pair of indicators that differ only in hue is a failed design. Give each state a distinct shape, position, or pattern as well. The same logic runs through inclusive design.
Test with real users. Print the panel at full size, hand it to eight people from the target audience, and ask what each symbol does. You will discover two or three you were certain about are ambiguous.
How the Marking Physically Gets Onto the Part
The method changes the design, so choose it before finalizing artwork:
- Molded-in (raised or recessed). Free per part once the tool exists, permanent, and single color only. Raised text needs draft; recessed text collects dirt. Requires 0.010 to 0.020 in of relief and clean draft angles, which interacts directly with draft angles and parting lines.
- Pad printing. The default for small multi-color graphics on curved plastic. Cheap per part, around $0.05 to $0.30 per color, but abrasion resistance is limited without a clear coat.
- Laser marking. Permanent, no consumables, excellent for serial numbers and variable data. Contrast depends on the resin; some plastics laser to a crisp dark mark and others barely change.
- Screen printing and IMD/IML. In-mold decoration puts a printed film behind the part surface, giving photographic quality that cannot be scratched off. Tooling and film costs make it a volume play.
- Labels and overlays. Fastest and most flexible, and the right answer for regulatory data that changes by region or for late-stage revisions. Adhesion on low-surface-energy plastics like PP needs a treated surface or a specific adhesive.
Whatever you choose, specify a durability test: a rub test with isopropyl alcohol, a tape pull, and an abrasion cycle count. Markings required by a safety standard must remain legible after those tests, and a test lab will run them.
Icon or Word? An Export Decision
Text has to be translated; symbols do not. A product sold in twelve countries with English labels needs twelve label variants, twelve part numbers, and twelve inventory positions, or one multilingual label crammed into an unreadable block. Symbol-based marking avoids all of that and is the reason mature product categories converge on pictograms.
The exception is safety wording. Many jurisdictions require warning text in the local language, so plan for a label or a manual insert to carry that content while the product surface carries symbols. Deciding this before you commit to a mold saves reworking the tool later, and the same logic applies to how you handle any post-release change through the engineering change order process.
Plan Early, Avoid Tool Rework
Modifying a mold to change molded text costs $500 to $3,000 and one to three weeks. The cheap version of this problem is solved on paper: build the marking layout during the industrial design phase and keep a live list of required compliance marks.
