What You Are Actually Hiring For
"Mechanical engineer" covers a wide range of people, and hiring the wrong slice of it is the most common early mistake. A CAD modeler turns your sketch into geometry. A design engineer decides how the mechanism works, what the wall thicknesses are, how the parts join, and what tolerances the assembly needs to close. A manufacturing engineer knows what the tool shop will refuse to build and what the assembly line will get wrong at 4 p.m. on a Friday.
Most ventures need the second and third and hire the first, because the deliverable looks the same in a screenshot. A file that renders beautifully and cannot be molded costs a full tooling cycle to discover. Before writing a job post, decide which of these you need, in what order, and whether one person can plausibly cover all of it.
Freelancer, Boutique Studio, or Full Development Firm
The independent freelancer
US mechanical design freelancers typically bill $65 to $150 per hour, with senior specialists in injection molding, sealing, or mechanism design reaching $180. You get direct access to the person doing the work and no agency overhead. What you do not get is bench depth: if the project needs electronics, firmware, or regulatory testing, you are the integrator, and if the freelancer takes a full-time job mid-project, the work stops.
The boutique studio
Three to fifteen people, usually a mix of industrial design and mechanical engineering, billing $110 to $200 per hour or quoting fixed-price phases. Continuity is better and the work gets reviewed by a second engineer. The tradeoff is that boutiques specialize, and a studio that has only done consumer housings will struggle with a pressurized fluid path.
The full development firm
Mechanical, electrical, firmware, and manufacturing engineering under one project manager. Rates run $130 to $250 per hour, and the value is that the interfaces between disciplines are somebody's job. A PCB that must fit a sealed enclosure which also dissipates heat fails at exactly those interfaces. Where to Actually Find Candidates
- Referrals from your contract manufacturer or tool shop. The best single source. A mold maker knows exactly which engineers send files that run the first time, and they have no incentive to recommend anyone else.
- Professional networks filtered by industry. Search for engineers who list your specific process, then look at what they published or presented rather than the headline title.
- Patent records. Engineers who solved a problem adjacent to yours are named as inventors on filings in your classification. This finds specialists no job board surfaces.
- Freelance marketplaces. Fast and cheap for bounded CAD tasks, weak for anything requiring judgment about manufacturing. Vet aggressively.
How to Read a Portfolio
Renders prove nothing. Anyone can produce a beautiful image of geometry that no factory will ever make. What you are looking for is evidence that products reached production and stayed there.
Ask for these specifics on two or three past projects:
- Did it ship, and how many units? A design that reached 40,000 units in the field went through DFM, tool trials, and field failures. A design that reached a trade show did not.
- Which manufacturing processes? Injection molding, sheet metal, die casting, and machining each carry different design rules. Experience in one does not transfer cleanly.
- What went wrong and what was the fix? The most useful question in the entire evaluation. Engineers who have been through production have a warping story, a tolerance stack story, and a supplier substitution story. Candidates with no failure stories have not been to production.
- Can I see a drawing package? Redacted is fine. You are checking whether they produce GD&T, tolerances, material callouts, and finish specs, or just a model. What a complete package contains is in what a manufacturing drawing must include.
- Who owns the CAD when we finish? Native files, not just STEP exports. Settle it in the contract.

What to Send in a First Inquiry
The quality of the quotes you get back is set almost entirely by the quality of what you send. A one-line email describing a great idea produces either a non-answer or a padded number.
A first inquiry that gets serious responses includes:
- What the product does, in two sentences, in plain language.
- Sketches or photos of any existing mockup, however rough. Napkin drawings are genuinely useful.
- Approximate size, weight target, and operating environment (indoor, outdoor, wet, hot).
- Who uses it and in what setting.
- Target retail price and expected annual volume. These two numbers determine every manufacturing decision that follows.
- Any hard constraints: it must fit a standard mounting pattern, run on a specific battery, meet a specific standard.
- Your timeline and budget range. Withholding budget does not get you a better price, it gets you a scope you cannot afford.
- What stage you are at and what you want from this engagement specifically.
Structuring that document properly is worth an hour of your time; the format is in writing an idea brief before you contact a development firm. An NDA before the first call is usually unnecessary and slows things down, and reputable firms will sign one when the conversation gets specific.
Structuring the First Engagement
Do not hand a stranger the whole product. Start with a paid, bounded piece of work: a feasibility review, a concept study, or a single subsystem, typically $3,000 to $12,000. You learn how they communicate, whether they hit dates, and whether their questions are sharper than yours. Both sides can still walk away cleanly.
