The short answer: it depends on how regulated your product is
One of the first questions founders and product managers ask is whether they must hire an engineering firm with experience in their specific industry. The intuition is that someone who has built a similar product will get there faster, and sometimes that is true. But in a large share of projects, domain experience is only one of several considerations, and not always the decisive one.
The dividing line is fairly clean. Where the required knowledge is regulatory and procedural rather than purely engineering, prior experience in that domain is close to mandatory. Where the required knowledge is engineering — mechanisms, materials, electronics, thermal, sealing — the skills transfer between industries far more easily than most people assume.
When industry experience genuinely is critical
Some fields carry knowledge that is not engineering knowledge at all, and entering them without background costs serious time and money:
- Medical devices. Design history file, risk management, biocompatibility testing, a formal quality system, and an FDA pathway. Projects here usually fail on documentation, not on engineering. Background is in our medical device development guide.
- Aerospace and defense. Harsh environmental qualification, customer-imposed quality requirements, long-term component availability, export control considerations, and FAA involvement where aircraft are concerned.
- Hazardous and regulated environments. Equipment for explosive atmospheres, food-contact products, and infant and children's products, where the standard dictates the design itself rather than merely validating it — see children's product development and CPSIA.
- Products with heavy certification exposure generally. If a failed test can restart your design, the cost of learning on your project is high — the landscape is mapped in product safety testing requirements.
In these fields, look for a firm with experience in the domain, or at minimum a team that has been through a comparable approval process before. The learning curve is too expensive to fund out of your budget.
When experience matters less than it seems
For most consumer products, industrial products, and smart devices, the engineering toolkit is remarkably similar from field to field. Designing a plastic part for injection molding, selecting a motor, laying out a circuit board, managing heat, sealing an enclosure, and running durability testing are skills that travel easily. An engineer who designed a wearable can design a kitchen appliance, because the principles are the same even when the application differs. In those cases, insisting on an exact experience match shrinks your candidate pool, raises your price, and sometimes yields a recycled solution copied from a previous project instead of one designed for you.
There is a genuine inverse risk as well: a firm that has developed dozens of products in one industry can carry the same old assumptions forward and miss exactly the differentiation you are looking for. A fresh look at a familiar problem is often the competitive advantage of a new product. Some of the cheapest, cleverest solutions come from engineers who did not know "how it is always done" in that category.
What actually determines project success
- Multidisciplinary depth. The ability to handle mechanics, electronics, firmware, and industrial design under one roof instead of stitching vendors together. Seams between vendors cause more failures than unfamiliar industries do.
- Manufacturing experience. Familiarity with contract manufacturers, tooling, and first production runs. A firm that only draws and has never supported production will leave you alone at the most critical moment.
- Working method. Milestones, documentation, version control, and change management — the discipline described in product development project management.
- Commercial transparency. A detailed quote, clear ownership of intellectual property, and fair payment terms.
- Engineering judgment. The willingness to say "this requirement will cost you three months, and here is a cheaper way to get the same outcome."

How to test it before you sign
Do not settle for a general question about experience. Ask to see one project close to your field and to hear exactly what the firm's role in it was, from design through production. Practical tools for that conversation are collected in how to evaluate an engineering firm's portfolio.
Then ask the question that actually separates candidates: what do you think the three hardest engineering problems in my product are? A firm with transferable competence will name real ones — sealing, cost target, thermal, certification path — even without industry background. A firm that answers in generalities has neither the domain knowledge nor the engineering instinct. Pay particular attention to evasive answers about accountability for results and about who actually performs the work.
The practical solution: put domain knowledge on the team
When there is no perfect match, the right answer is usually to combine a strong engineering team with a domain consultant — or with your own expertise. In practice, the client is normally the biggest market expert in the room, and the development firm brings the engineering ability to translate that knowledge into a product.
A concrete way to do this: schedule a joint requirements round at the start of the project where you present the rules of the game in your industry, and define review checkpoints where an outside specialist reviews the deliverables. For regulated categories, add a documentation review by someone who has been through that submission before. This brings domain knowledge into the project at low cost and at the right moments, giving you the benefits of an industry-experienced firm without paying an unnecessary premium or sacrificing engineering quality.
