You can tell whether an invention idea is worth pursuing by running five specific tests on it before you spend money: how intense the problem is, who actually pays and how much, whether you can reach that buyer affordably, what protects you if it works, and whether you are the right person to carry it. Almost every inventor knows the feeling of an idea that looks brilliant at three in the morning and pale by breakfast. The question is not one of gut feeling, and it is not settled by friends saying "wow." It is a page of written answers you can produce alone, in an afternoon, and it screens out a large share of ideas that would otherwise consume a year and a lot of cash.

Be clear about what this is not. It is not customer validation, which is a separate process covered in our guide to validating a product idea, and it is not gathering outside opinions, discussed in getting honest feedback on a product idea. This is the self-screen that comes before both.

Test 1: How badly does the problem hurt?

A good idea starts with a problem someone feels, not with a clever solution. Ask yourself:

  • How often does the problem occur — daily, weekly, twice a year?
  • What does each occurrence cost in money, time, or frustration?
  • What are people doing today to cope with it?

The strongest answer describes a frequent, expensive problem currently handled by an irritating workaround. The weakest is "there is no problem, it would just be nice." Nice-to-have products sell only when they are very cheap or genuinely delightful. Try writing the problem in one sentence without mentioning your product at all. If you cannot, you do not yet understand the problem well enough to design for it.

Test 2: Who pays, and against what?

Three sub-questions, and all three matter:

  • Who signs the check? Not always the user. Sometimes the parent, the employer, the facility, the insurer. A chain where payer and user differ makes the sale considerably harder.
  • What is your price compared against? Buyers benchmark you against the alternative, and the alternative is often "do nothing," which is free.
  • Does the price leave room above cost? If a rough estimate of unit cost lands close to the price you believe you can charge, the idea does not work economically no matter how good the engineering is. A structured look at that arithmetic is what a feasibility study produces.

Test 3: Can you actually reach the buyer?

A large market on paper is worth nothing without a practical, affordable route to it. Ask where these buyers are concentrated: is there a distributor, a trade show, a retailer, a professional association, an online community that aggregates them? Then ask roughly what it would take to acquire one paying customer. A very dispersed audience, or one reachable only through expensive advertising, turns a reasonable idea into an unprofitable venture. This is the test where a small, well-defined market often beats a huge vague one — an argument we develop in our piece on niche product markets and profitability.

Test 4: What protects you if it works?

Assume the idea succeeds. What stops someone better funded from copying it within months? Protection can take several forms: a granted patent, a design registration, manufacturing know-how that is hard to reproduce, a brand, privileged access to customers, or genuine engineering complexity that takes years to replicate. If the honest answer is "nothing protects it," that is not automatically fatal — but you should understand that your advantage is speed, and speed is temporary. Test 5: Are you the right person for this idea?

The easiest test to skip and the most decisive one. Do you know the field? Do you have access to its customers or partners? Will you still want to work on this long after the initial excitement fades? A mediocre idea in the hands of someone who lives in the industry usually beats an excellent idea in the hands of someone who wandered in. When several ideas are on the table at once, this is normally the tiebreaker: choose the one where you hold an unfair advantage — experience, relationships, or a real understanding of the customer — rather than the one that sounds biggest. What to do with the results

If four or five tests pass with confidence, the idea has earned real customer research and a feasibility check. If two or three fail, the usual answer is not to abandon the idea but to change it: swap the target audience, narrow the solution to its most valuable function, or change the sales model. Many strong products are the third version of a weak first idea.

And if the tests keep failing after honest revision, recognizing that is a skill rather than a defeat — the money you do not spend on a bad idea is available for the next one. Whatever the outcome, write the answers down. One written page is worth more than a month of turning the question over in your head, and it becomes the first document of a real project.
