Ready Does Not Mean Certain

The question behind "is my idea ready" is usually a money question. Engineering is the point where an idea starts consuming real budget, and once CAD exists and parts are ordered, changing direction is no longer free. Starting too early burns cash proving something you could have learned for nothing. Starting too late means a competitor learns it first.

Ready does not mean the idea is finished, validated, or safe. It means the remaining unknowns are engineering unknowns rather than market or definition unknowns, and that spending money is now the only way to reduce them.

Sign One: The Problem Fits in One Sentence

You can state, in a single sentence with no conjunctions, who has the problem, what it costs them, and how often it occurs. "Dental hygienists lose 15 to 20 minutes per day sterilizing a tool that has to be handled three times" is a problem statement. "There is no good solution for oral care workflow" is a category.

If your sentence needs an "and also," the product is probably two products. The discipline behind writing that sentence properly is covered in defining the problem your product solves, and it is the single highest-leverage hour in the whole process.

Sign Two: You Have Talked to Users Who Are Not Your Friends

Ten to fifteen conversations with people who actually have the problem, none of whom owe you politeness. What you are listening for is not enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is free and means nothing. You are listening for the workaround they use today, how much time or money it wastes, what they have already tried and abandoned, and whether they name a price without being prompted.

The strongest single signal is someone asking when they can buy it, unprompted, twice. The weakest is "that's a great idea." Sign Three: You Checked That It Does Not Already Exist

Two searches, both of which you can do yourself in a weekend. The commercial search covers Amazon, Alibaba, trade catalogs, and industry suppliers, in the vocabulary your industry uses rather than yours. Ideas that appear novel to an outsider are frequently standard equipment inside a trade.

The patent search is separate and answers a different question: not "can I sell this" but "has someone described this already." A basic prior art search using free databases takes a few hours and either reassures you or saves you a fortune. Finding something similar is not automatically a stop signal, since most products are improvements on prior work, but you need to know before you design rather than after.

Sign Four: The Physics Is Plausible

You are not required to know how to build it. You are required to have checked that nothing in the concept violates something basic: the battery energy available in the volume you have, the force a small motor can produce, the accuracy a $3 sensor can deliver, the temperature a plastic housing can survive.

Most of these are one-hour desk checks. Compute the energy, look up a datasheet, find an existing product that does something comparable and see how big it is. Ideas die here more often than anywhere else, and it costs nothing. A concept that needs a week of run time from a coin cell while driving a display is not a design problem, it is an arithmetic problem, and no amount of engineering budget fixes it.

When the answer is genuinely unclear, that is what a feasibility study is for, and it is a much smaller commitment than a development project.

Sign Five: You Have Budget for the First Phase, Not the Whole Road

Waiting until you can fund the entire path to production is a common and expensive form of procrastination, because until the first phase is done, nobody can price the rest honestly. What you need is enough to reach the next decision point with a clear result. That might be $5,000 for concept work and a feasibility read, or $15,000 to $40,000 for definition plus a first working prototype, depending on complexity. What matters is that the money is genuinely available, that spending it will not put you in a position where you must continue regardless of the result, and that you know in advance what outcome would make you stop.

Signs the Idea Is Not Ready Yet

  • The concept keeps growing. Every conversation adds a feature. That means the core value is not settled, and development will chase a moving target at your expense.
  • You cannot name a first customer type. "Everyone" and "consumers" are not markets. If two different buyers need two different products, pick one.
  • The whole case depends on one untested assumption. If the business only works at a $12 unit cost, or only if a hospital changes its protocol, test that first and separately.
  • You are the only user you have observed. Personal frustration is a legitimate starting point and a poor sole data source.
  • You want the prototype to convince yourself. A $30,000 prototype is a very expensive way to answer a question that fifteen phone calls would settle.

When Only Half the List Is Satisfied

Missing signals are not verdicts, they are tasks, and most are cheap. Missing user conversations is two weeks of phone calls. Missing the prior art check is a weekend. Missing feasibility clarity is a paid feasibility phase measured in low thousands. Missing budget is a real constraint, but knowing precisely what you need to raise makes raising it easier.

The one signal that should genuinely stop you is a problem that no user confirms. Everything else can be worked. And if the answer after honest work is that the idea does not hold up, walking away deliberately is a win, not a failure; the framing is in when to abandon a product idea.
