Step 1: Write everything down

Step 2: Search for prior art

Someone may have invented it already — and that is fine to discover now, devastating to discover after spending thousands. Search Google, online marketplaces, and patents using the free patent search tools from the USPTO and Google Patents. Finding something close does not necessarily kill your idea; your improvement over it may itself be the invention.

Step 3: Define who it is for and why they would pay

One sentence: "[Person] with [problem] would pay [rough price] for [solution]." If you cannot fill in the blanks, the idea is not ready for money yet. This sentence drives every later decision, from features to manufacturing cost targets.

Step 4: Validate demand cheaply

Step 5: Keep it confidential while you decide on protection

Public disclosure starts legal clocks: in the US you have a one-year grace period to file after disclosing, and most foreign rights are lost immediately. Share selectively, use NDAs where you can, and do not post the invention publicly until you have a protection plan.

Step 6: File a provisional patent application if the idea checks out

A provisional application secures a filing date and "patent pending" status for twelve months at low cost, buying you a year to develop and validate before committing to full patent spend. Step 7: Build the ugliest prototype that proves the point

Step 8: Get a reality check on cost and manufacturability

Before dreaming of retail shelves, get an engineering opinion: what would this cost to develop properly, what would a unit cost to manufacture, and are there physics or regulatory obstacles (UL, FCC, CPSC, FDA depending on category)?
