To find a manufacturer for your product, you need three things in order: a production-ready design package that factories can quote from, a shortlist of candidate manufacturers found through directories, referrals, and trade sources, and a vetting process — quotes, samples, and a pilot order — that proves a factory can deliver quality at your price before you commit real money. Skipping any of the three is how first-time founders end up with unusable inventory. Here is the process step by step.
Before you search: get your documentation ready
Factories quote from documents, not dreams. At minimum you need 3D CAD files, 2D drawings with tolerances, a bill of materials (BOM), material and finish specifications, and quality criteria. Send a vague sketch and you will get vague pricing and a prototype-quality product. Decide: contract manufacturer or your own supply chain?
A contract manufacturer (CM) builds your finished product end to end — sourcing components, assembling, testing, packing. The alternative is managing separate suppliers for molding, PCBs, and assembly yourself, which is cheaper on paper and much harder in practice. Where to actually find manufacturers
- Online sourcing directories. Global B2B platforms list thousands of factories with capability filters; US-focused directories index domestic job shops and CMs by process and region. Treat listings as leads, not endorsements — verified badges are marketing, not audits.
- Referrals. Ask other founders in your category, your engineers, and industry groups. A factory that already ships a product like yours for someone you trust is worth ten cold listings.
- Trade shows. Manufacturing and category trade shows put dozens of factory representatives in one room and let you judge communication quality face to face.
- Development partners. Engineering firms that take products to production maintain vetted factory networks and can introduce you to manufacturers already proven on similar products — usually the shortest path for a first-timer.
Domestic vs. overseas manufacturing
US manufacturing offers easier communication, shorter shipping, simpler IP enforcement, and a "Made in USA" story — at a higher unit cost that suits low volumes, heavy or regulated products, and fast iteration. Overseas manufacturing wins on unit price and deep supplier ecosystems, at the cost of distance, longer lead times, freight, and tariffs. Vetting: quotes, samples, pilot run
Request quotes from at least three to five factories with identical documentation so numbers are comparable. Watch how they respond: good factories ask questions about your drawings; bad ones quote instantly on anything. Check capability fit (a CNC shop is not an injection molder), ask for references from clients with similar products, and verify certifications like ISO quality management where relevant. Then pay for samples — judge quality, communication, and schedule honesty. Protect yourself in the paperwork
Use purchase agreements that fix specifications, quality standards (with an agreed acceptable-defect level), delivery terms, and payment milestones tied to inspections — never 100% up front. For overseas suppliers, contracts adapted to the supplier's jurisdiction and properly registered IP protect far better than a US-only NDA. Third-party inspection before shipment is cheap insurance on every early order.
