Why factories set MOQs

Seven tactics that actually lower MOQs

1. Use standard materials and components

Custom colors, custom finishes, and exotic components each drag their own supplier minimums into your order. Speccing stock resin colors, standard hardware, and commonly stocked components removes entire categories of minimums at once.

2. Pay a setup fee instead of buying volume

Offer to cover the changeover cost directly. Many factories will halve an MOQ for a buyer who pays a one-time setup charge, because the fee solves the exact problem the MOQ exists to solve.

3. Accept a higher per-unit price on the first run

A small first order at a 10–30% unit premium is often acceptable to both sides — you limit inventory risk, the factory protects its margin, and you renegotiate pricing when you reorder at volume.

4. Commit to a forecast, order in releases

A blanket purchase order for a larger annual quantity, delivered and paid in smaller releases, gives the factory the volume certainty it wants while you carry small-batch inventory.

5. Start with a trial-order framing

Factories understand that a successful sample run leads to reorders. Explicitly framing your small order as a qualification run for a larger program changes the conversation — especially when you can show real traction such as pre-orders or retail interest.
