The Need
Birds that come to drink and bathe in private swimming pools leave behind droppings, feathers, and contamination that burden the filtration system and force daily cleaning. Existing solutions — scarecrows, reflective tape, netting — lose their effect within days, because birds habituate to any constant stimulus. The client asked for a system that reacts only when a bird is actually there, and deters it with water — a deterrent no bird gets used to.
The Engineering Solution
The system consists of two units: a pole-mounted camera unit overlooking the pool, and a sprinkler unit connected to a standard garden hose. The camera runs motion detection and bird classification on a tiny onboard computer — another application of embedded computer vision, an area where electronics development and software meet — and when a bird is detected in the pool area, a wireless command triggers the sprinkler to fire a short burst of water toward it. Sensor choices and the link between the two units were made with a real backyard in mind: range, direct sun, and water spray.
Built for the Outdoors
Both units sit outside all year in sun, chlorine, and water, so the enclosures were designed around water- and dust-sealing principles familiar from mechanical engineering practice: a sealed lens mount, drainage openings, and a weighted base that keeps the sprinkler stable against the jet's recoil. The prototypes were produced by 3D printing and tested at an active pool — exactly the role of a first functional model, as we describe in prototyping.
During testing, detection sensitivity and spray duration were tuned: too short a burst didn't deter, too long wasted water and soaked the surroundings. The final version finds the sweet spot — a response of a few seconds that startles the bird and stops immediately — and the whole system runs from sunrise to dark and shuts itself down at night.
Takeaway
In animal deterrence the key is response, not presence: a stimulus that appears only at the right moment and the right place stays effective over time, while every static solution wears out. One smart sensor beats ten scarecrows.
